Journalist’s background: The following questions relate to overgrown vegetation obstructing footpath and cycle ways.

Please attribute the following comments to City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty:

In the past 12 months, how many complaints has the City had in regards to overgrown vegetation, how does this compare to the previous 12 months?
The number of complaints the City of South Perth has received in regards to overgrown vegetation by year is as follows: 

• 2013: six up to May 2013
• 2012: 7 in 2012
• 2011: 32.

These numbers relate to incidences where notices were issued to have the obstruction cleared. 

Has there been one particular area that has been the subject of more complaints? if so, where?   
No. 

What problems can overgrown vegetation cause? 
The obstruction of the footpath or walkways can pose a problem for people who have difficulty with access and movement, especially thorny or cactus like plants for example Bougainvillea.

What is the City's policy on overgrown vegetation obstructing footpath and cycle ways? 
If residents do not ensure their vegetation is clear of footpaths then the City may have to complete the work and recover the cost (approximately $200).

In respect to the pruning of private vegetation overhanging a verge or footpath, all vegetation should be removed from the boundary fence, or in the absence of a boundary fence, 300mm from the property side of the footpath to a height of 2.5 meters, excluding ground covering plants inside 300mm from the footpath to a height of 600mm.

Many residents put considerable effort into maintaining attractive gardens, trees and shrubs at the front of their properties.
