Australia Day

The City of South Perth invites the community to an inclusive, family-friendly celebration on Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth Foreshore on Australia Day, Saturday 26 January 2019.

The day commences at 8am with the Flag Raising Ceremony which includes the delivery of the Australian flag, a blessing, the formal unfurling and then the rising of the Australian flag by the Australian Defence Forces. 

The Citizenship Ceremony follows where guests are welcomed with a traditional Welcome to Country before being inducted as new Australian citizens. Members of the public are also invited to join in and reaffirm their citizenship pledge together with the City's newest Australians.

The proceedings also include a presentation of the Australia Day WA Citizen of the Year Awards, acknowledging those individuals and organisations that make a notable contribution during the year, and/or those who have given outstanding service over a number of years. The Ted Maslen Award is also presented to the student resident who achieves the highest score of all year 12 students within the City of South Perth.

At 9.30am local Rotary Clubs will fire up the barbeque and host a Great Aussie Breakfast, with all proceeds raised going back to the community. 

Presented by the City of South Perth and supported by Lotterywest, the 2019 South Perth Australia Day Celebration Zone will commences at 3pm, featuring multiple event areas with 100 free activities suitable for toddlers through to adults. New this year - Stunt Jump, Basket Connect 4, Airbrush Tattoos and the Big Wedgie water slides plus lots more. Roving entertainers and performers will add to the fun atmosphere: Balloon Artistry by Aaron Smith, Samba Band Beleza Samba, Puppeteers from DNA Puppetry, Hey Presto Magician, Hula Lula Ladies Band, Shrinking Violet Stilt Walkers and the Dinosaur Kids Train.

Spanning over 10 hectares along the South Perth Foreshore, there will be a range of food vendors and ample shade and picnic areas for families to enjoy. 

All activities in the Celebration Zone will wrap up at 7.30pm to allow visitors to find a spot to watch the City of Perth Skyworks fireworks display at 8pm.

“Our Australia Day events and Celebration Zone supported by Lotterywest offer all members of the community the opportunity to come together and enjoy Australia Day in a safe, alcohol and smoke free environment,” City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty said.

“The South Perth Foreshore will be teaming with 100 free activities and entertainment for all ages, and there’ll be plenty of shady areas for picnicking.

“We strongly encourage people to consider using public transport on the day. The City will provide a free shuttle service between George Burnett Leisure Centre in Karawara, the Civic Centre in South Perth and the event zone. Both venues are easily accessible from the Kwinana Freeway and have ample parking.”

Australia Day important information

Free Event Transport Service

To facilitate access to the City of South Perth Celebration Zone, the City will be providing a free shuttle service between George Burnett Leisure Centre (GBLC), Manning Rd, Cnr Elderfield Rd, Karawara; the City of South Perth Civic Centre, cnr Sandgate St and South Tce, South Perth and the event zone.

The shuttle buses will run approximately every 10 minutes back and forth between 2-9.30pm, but not during the fireworks (7.30-8.30pm).

Both GBLC and the Civic Centre are easily accessible from the Kwinana Freeway and have ample parking facilities.

Disability & ACROD Parking

There are three parking areas for disability/ACROD permit holders (see map):

  • Inside the Celebration Zone (off Mill Point Rd opposite Forrest St)
  • Coode St Car Park (end of Coode St)
  • Hurlingham Rd Car Park (end of Hurlingham Rd)

A valid ACROD permit must be displayed to gain access into the access restricted areas (entering via the points marked on the map).

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking is available inside the Celebration Zone (see map). Don’t forget to bring a bike lock.

Driving

Visitors to the Australia Day Celebration Zone are strongly encouraged to use public transport.

The Kwinana Freeway exit ramps (Northbound and Southbound) and the roads bounded by Labouchere Road, Angelo Street, Douglas Avenue, Canning Highway and Ellam Street will be closed from 12pm to 10.30pm.

On-Demand Transport Vehicles

Official taxis with the mandatory and illuminated roof sign with the word ‘Taxi’, can enter and exit the restricted area via the points marked on the map.

Uber drivers, Ola drivers, small charter vehicles and limousine companies will need to apply for a permit to access the restricted area. Please contact the City during business hours on 9474 0777.

Restricted access area - orange area (no parking zone)

Please note that the orange area of the map is a restricted access zone and no street, verge or crossover parking will be permitted during the times indicated on the map. Local residents should refer to the resident parking information. 

Restricted parking - pink area

Anyone can access this area but parking is restricted to maintain sufficient access for emergency vehicles. Residents or guests that ordinarily park on the road or verge (this includes your crossover), must observe the temporary parking signs. To find out if your street is affected please refer to the map. 

Penalties & Infringements

Double penalties apply to all City of South Perth infringements issued on Australia Day 2019.

Illegally parked vehicles within the Parking Restricted Area will be towed and impounded.

Items not allowed on the South Perth Foreshore

For safety reasons please do not bring large objects (greater than 1.5m) into the event zone. They will be impounded.

Please do not bring glass containers into the event zone.

Drones are not permitted to fly over populous areas so please don’t bring your drone to the Australia Day celebrations in South Perth. For more information visit www.casa.gov.au.

Collection of impounded goods can be arranged from Monday 28 January 2019 during business hours by phoning the City’s Ranger Services on 9474 0777.
