City celebrates NAIDOC Week 2024
For this year’s NAIDOC Week, held from 7–14 July, the City of South Perth will be hosting a series of free events to celebrate the history, cultures and achievements of First Nations people.
Kicking off the festivities this year is the City’s Official Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday 8 July. Head down to South Perth Community Hall at 1.30–2.30pm for the ceremony and stay on for afternoon tea and Noongar Bedtime Stories and Craft event.
On Wednesday 10 July, Bush Tucker with Joe Collard invites you to learn about local bush tucker ingredients and how to incorporate them into your diet. Rounding off the festivities, Noongar Language Storytime with Dylan Collard will help children expand their language skills through story.
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and celebrate the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture.
City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
“NAIDOC Week is an important week in the City’s cultural calendar, and South Perth has been home to the Whadjuk Noongar people for over 45,000 years. I invite our local community to join us on Monday 8 July for the City’s NAIDOC Week Flag Raising Ceremony at the South Perth Community Hall, which will be followed by a light afternoon tea,” he said.
