Families cook up healthy habits with nom!
Families have been cooking, learning, and sharing healthy meals together thanks to the success of the City’s collaboration with the Foodbank WA nom! Children cooking program in Manning.
Over five weeks, nine local families attended weekly sessions where they learned to prepare tasty, low-cost meals and gained confidence in creating healthy, stress-free mealtimes. Each two-and-a-half-hour session included interactive activities, discussion and a full hour of hands-on cooking. Children were cared for in a crèche and joined their parents for a shared meal at the end of each session.
Attendees praised the program, with feedback including:
“Amazing facilitators, nice to meet other mummies, love the hands-on cooking too.”
“Thank you SO much, I looked forward to this every week.”
“So much useful information about feeding my family and recipes which I can use.”
nom! Children is a free community healthy eating and cooking program designed to give parents and carers the tools to create positive eating experiences for the whole family. Participants learn skills such as choosing healthy foods, planning meals on a budget, reading food labels and packing safe, nutritious lunchboxes. Each family also takes home a recipe book, shopping bag, the Let’s Feed the Family parent guide and a kid’s healthy eating plate.
The Nom! Children program is just one way the City is working towards fostering a healthy and connected community. Stay tuned for upcoming Junior Kitchen – Super Snacks and Quick Bites for Teens sessions during school holidays on Wednesday 28 January, as well as other family-friendly activities through Kaya Karawara.
