Community turns out for Recycling Centre Open Day

News Update 25 November 2025
Waste & Rec

We’ve “bin” thinking a lot about recycling lately - and it seems you have too. It was a big weekend at our Recycling Centre, where we hosted our first-ever Open Day on Saturday 22 November.

Locals of all ages attended the free, family-friendly event which was a fantastic opportunity for them to come together, dispose of their recyclables responsibly, learn about sustainable practices and explore the Centre’s facilities. This includes the new Containers for Change Drop & Go point and the Reuse Shop, operated by Workpower, which received plenty of quality donations and did a roaring trade on the day.

Visitors chatted with the City’s Waste team about our services, purchased reusable green waste bags and stocked up on free Containers for Change collection bags, while the Verge Valet™ team was on hand to explain how easy it is to use the City’s new pre-booked verge collection service.

There were demonstrations on food waste composting, featuring thriving worm farms, and the team from Earthwhile Australia brought along microscopes for people to analyse soil samples.

The team from Cleanaway ran educational games and gave away prizes, with the star attraction being a shiny new recycling truck for kids to explore.

Attendees also enjoyed a sausage sizzle run by the Salter Point Sea Scouts and free coffee – complete with complimentary fudge.

Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions, provided feedback and got involved — your participation supports a cleaner, greener community.

If you couldn’t make it to the Open Day, come and check out the Recycling Centre for yourself. You’ll find it at 199 Thelma Street, Como, and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday 8am-2pm.
