Safety upgrade for Dyson Street and Canning Highway intersection
The City of South Perth is improving safety at the Dyson Street and Canning Highway intersection, one of the City’s worst black spots.
Over the past five years, 16 crashes have been recorded at this intersection, including four that resulted in hospital visits. While none were fatal, many involved right-turn or right-angle collisions. Contributing factors included high traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and risky right-turn movements across oncoming traffic.
The upgrades will aim to reduce crashes by preventing rights turns into and out of Dyson Street, support smoother traffic flow and improve safety for all road users.
Main Roads WA has contributed $225,000 towards the South Perth intersection upgrade as part of its Black Spot Program which targets roads with a proven crash history.
Night works are scheduled to start Monday 20 October 2025 and will run for about three weeks, weather permitting. Work hours will be 7:00pm to 5:30am, Monday to Saturday.
The project will include:
- installing a median island on Canning Highway to prevent right turns onto and out of Dyson Street.
- modifying splitter islands on both Dyson Street approaches.
- realigning pedestrian crossings.
- resurfacing the road, which may temporarily affect property access.
- upgrading access ramps, footpaths and kerbing, which may impact reticulation systems.
Residents will be notified, and more information will be available on the City's website.
