Manning residents enjoy nature-based upgrades to Godwin Avenue sump
Residents surrounding Godwin Avenue in Manning were invited to an official opening of the Godwin Avenue Sump project on Thursday 21 November 2024.
In partnership with RAC through its Reconnect WA initiative and Water Corporation, the stormwater drainage sump on Godwin Avenue was transformed into a more functional and attractive area, with improved bike riding connections linking people to Canning Bridge train station, local schools and Curtin University.
This project improves the quality of stormwater entering the sump due to high nutrient stripping capacity of plantings, enhances the local wildlife habitat, improves public amenity and activates the community area with a new family-friendly active transport connection.
Residents and special guests were treated to coffee and treats from Our Ruby Girl.
City of South Perth mayor, Greg Milner said the upgrade was more than just an infrastructure project, it was a step forward in making the community more sustainable, accessible, safe and connected.
“It is an example of how we can restore natural ecosystems while improving the functionality of public spaces,” he said.
“We’ve also created a family-friendly public space with the inclusion of a nature play zone, a grass and rest area, and a range of seating options, including a wheelchair parking pad for accessibility.
“Whether you're here to relax, enjoy the natural surroundings, or get active, there’s something for everyone.”
The works were completed in April 2024 and include:
- A biofiltration system to help remove pollutants and excess nutrients from stormwater
- Increased stormwater filtration area
- Revegetated and mulched natural areas with sight lines
- Wildlife habitat features including bird watering station, insect hotel, bird and microbat nesting boxes
- Open grass and rest areas
- Informal access paths connecting the existing north and south paths
- Nature play zone
- Seating, with a wheelchair parking pad
- Bicycle parking, bins and a drinking fountain
- Extended cycle path and raised road crossing
