A tale of fantasy and justice receives top gong

A compelling fantasy story set at a funeral was recognised as the most outstanding entry at the South Perth Young Writers Award (SPYWA).

The powerfully crafted short story by upper secondary student Qian-Qian Wong was awarded the prestigious Christobel Mattingley Bronze Medallion, named after award winning children’s author and founder of SPYWA.

Titled the Funeral, it begins as a sombre story of loss and quickly unfolds into a captivating tale of justice and fantasy.

Qian-Qian was among a pool of incredibly talented young local writers awarded for their outstanding entries at the 38th annual SPYWA in September 2024.

The award, which is open to students from Year 1 to 12, attracted more than 160 entries, displaying an impressive level of talent and creativity across all age groups.

SPYWA aims to inspire young people to express their creative ideas through writing and entries are judged across five age categories by a pane of educators, writers and children’s literature enthusiasts.

Entries also covered a diverse range of genres including comedy, fantasy, thriller, adventure, horror, historical and mystery.

SPYWA entries for 2025 will open in Term 1. To find out more visit southperth.wa.gov.au/SPYWA
