Multi-Sensory kits encourage happy memories

News Update 6 June 2023

The City’s Libraries have recently acquired five Multi-Sensory Time Kits to assist community members who are having difficulties with memory loss and recall.

Designed under the guidance of an Occupational Therapist to help people who are living with dementia or other neurological and age-related disorders, the kits can help people to recall memories through senses; encourage happy memories; and discussion with other people.

There are 5 kits available for loan:

  • The Dairy
  • The Beach
  • The Garden
  • The Shearing Shed
  • The Kitchen

Each kit has items which relate to its theme and encourage participants to use their senses - sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. The kits also contain a DVD, USB, information booklet and evaluation page.

The Multi-Sensory kits have been used by carers, family and friends, in care homes and private settings. They are in libraries, aged care centres, day activity centres and hospices.

The kits are free to borrow and can be reserved via the online catalogue by the City’s library members.

The Multi-Sensory Time project was developed by Soroptimist International (Albany) with support from the State Government through the Department of Communities.

Soroptimist International of South Perth purchased the kits and have generously supplied them to the City’s libraries as loanable resources.
