City recognised for excellence in engagement on Karawara Access Plan
The City of South Perth has been recognised on the state stage for its work on the Karawara Pedestrian and Cycle Access Plan (KPACAP), receiving a commendation in the Stakeholder Engagement category at the Planning Institute of Australia 2025 WA Awards for Planning Excellence.
Adopted by Council in February 2025 and supported by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage in September, the KPACAP sets out a clear and consistent way to assess future changes to Karawara’s 32 pedestrian access ways.
It also identifies how each laneway is used, classifying them as either essential or non-essential to help guide future upgrades and maintenance.
The commendation reflects a comprehensive evidence-based engagement process that combined mobility data, pedestrian counts, audits and interactive mapping with meaningful conversations across the community. More than 230 submissions ensured residents’ lived experience shaped recommendations and strengthened future decision-making.
