Product safety recall for coloured play sand

The City has been advised that there has been a product safety recall of Educational Colours – Rainbow Sand, Creatistics – Coloured Sand, Kadink – Coloured Decorative Sand, Active Sandtub 14 piece Sand Castle Building Set, Blue Magic Sand, Green Magic Sand, and Pink Magic Sand that are used for craft activities and sensory play. 

This sand was purchased by the City in the last 18 months and was primarily used in Play Time sessions at Manning Library. 

The supplier has issued this recall as some batches may contain asbestos. Testing has not found any respiratory asbestos (fibres that can be breathed in), and the overall risk has been assessed as low. 

Importantly, respirable asbestos has not been detected in any of the tested samples. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising. 

The City is following the guidance of Product Safety Australia and is no longer using these products.
