The City of South Perth is inviting the community to its first Recycling Centre Open Day on Saturday 22 November a free, family-friendly event where residents can explore, learn and take part in sustainable practices.

Visitors can explore the City’s Recycling Centre at 199 Thelma Street, Como which is home to a new Reuse Shop and Containers for Change Drop & Go point. The Verge Valet™ team will be there to show how easy it is to use the City’s new pre-booked verge collection service, while Cleanaway will have one of their trucks for the kids to get up close with. The City’s Waste team will be available throughout the day to answer any questions. There will also be demonstrations on food waste composting, fun games and giveaways, plus free coffee (BYO keep cup) and a sausage sizzle raising funds for the Salter Point Sea Scouts.

Attendees are encouraged to bring along their eligible items to be recycled on the day – from scrap metal, polystyrene and cardboard to 10c containers, coffee pods and unwanted clothes.

Mayor Greg Milner said the Open Day was part of the City’s broader push to encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle – and continue the recycling conversation following National Recycling Week, held 10-16 November

He said the community had already shown fantastic support for the new Reuse Shop, operated by Workpower and the Containers for Change Drop & Go point, operated by Good Sammy, since they opened in August.

"In just three months our community has collected almost 15,000 containers and donated 13 tonnes of preloved household items.  By working together, we’re keeping useful, still-valuable materials in circulation and out of the waste stream. We’re overjoyed to see our community embracing the new facilities at our Recycling Centre, with participation levels well above our original projections” Mayor Milner said.

He said the City’s first Recycling Centre Open Day was a great chance for residents to see how their small actions could make a big difference for the environment and promote sustainability.

“We want to show everyone that reducing waste can be fun, easy and rewarding. From our new Reuse Shop to the Containers for Change Drop & Go point, this Open Day is all about discovering practical ways to minimise waste and support a circular economy.”

The City of South Perth Recycling Centre Open Day will be held from 10am-2pm. Visit the event listing for more information.
