Help track our feathered residents this October

News Update 15 October 2025

Look up, listen closely, and get ready to count – the 2025 Aussie Bird Count is coming from 21–27 October.

Run by BirdLife Australia since 2014, this annual citizen science event invites residents in the City of South Perth and across the country to spend 20 minutes in their backyard, local park, or favourite outdoor spot observing and recording the birds they see.

With one in six Australian birds facing the threat of extinction, every sighting helps build a national snapshot of bird populations, track trends, guide conservation efforts and protect habitats for the future.

During the 2024 Aussie Bird Count, 71 bird species and 4,599 individual birds were recorded across the City by 72 local birdwatchers – many first-time participants – who spent more than 57 hours observing.

The Rainbow Lorikeet took the top spot as the most commonly sighted species, with 615 recorded across South Perth, followed by the Little Black Cormorant and New Holland Honeyeater.

Which feathered friend will take the top spot this year – the Magpie, Black Swan or perhaps the Willy Wagtail? There’s only one way to find out. Download the Aussie Bird Count app, join in, have fun and help support local wildlife this October.
