Take part in the 2024 Aussie Bird Count

News Update 11 October 2024
All bird lovers, twitchers and budding ornithologists are invited to take part in one of Australia’s biggest citizen science events – the Aussie Bird Count.

All you need is twenty minutes to join in this nation-wide event, which helps Birdlife Australia monitor local bird populations and biodiversity trends.

Getting involved this year is easy! Find a spot anywhere outside – the backyard, the bus stop or your favourite park bench – note any birds you see, then submit your findings via the Aussie Bird Count website or app.

This year’s count takes place during National Bird Week, between 14-20 October 2024, and anyone can join in on the fun. Register and download the app at aussiebirdcount.org.au.

What happens to the Bird Count data?

By participating in the Aussie Bird Count, you will be helping BirdLife Australia find out about the common species that live where people live. Providing a snapshot of Australian birds at the same time each year allows BirdLife Australia to look at the trends in our bird communities from year to year. This is important because it’s these more common species that give us the best indication of the health of the environment – think of birds as a barometer for nature!
