City set to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2023
The City is honoring NAIDOC Week 2023 by hosting free events that celebrate the rich history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
All members of the community are invited to attend the City’s Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday 3 July, from 1.30–2.30pm, to acknowledge the First Nations community in the City of South Perth and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The annual event will be held at South Perth Community Hall, followed by an afternoon tea for all to enjoy.
NAIDOC Week, held from 2–9 July – is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘For our Elders’, recognising Elders who have and continue to play an important role and hold a prominent place in the communities and families of First Nations people.
“We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this land, the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation and their Elders past and present,” City of South Perth Mayor, Greg Milner said.
“South Perth has been home to the Wadjuk Noongar/Bibbulmun people for over 45,000 years. The rivers continue to be sources of spiritual, cultural, economic and familial connection for the Whadjuk people and to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples more broadly around the State.
“Aboriginal people have made meaningful contributions to our community, and the City recognises the importance of culture, and improved connections and stronger relationships with our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
“The City’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan guides the City’s reconciliation journey and as a City and Council we are committed to creating meaningful change as we work together with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations.”
