Development application Canning Hwy and Robert St Como

Media Response 10 December 2021

Response to media enquiry regarding a development application for lots 3 and 4 (numbers 109 and 111) Robert Street Como and lots 118 and119 (numbers 469 and 471) Canning Highway, Como.

Response from Mayor Greg Milner

The City of South Perth is not the decision-maker on this development application. Under the State Government’s State of Emergency Declaration made in March 2020, all developments with a value of over $20 million go straight to the State Government’s State Development Assessment Unit for approval, rather than to Council.

The City has asked that the development be adjusted so it meets the requirements of the City’s Town Planning Scheme No.6 and the Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan. The City’s recommendation included a more open and active ground floor frontage to Canning Highway to ensure the pedestrian experience along Canning Highway is improved, and that people feel safe and comfortable. I’m hopeful the State Government’s decision-makers will take this on board.

Background

The Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan (CBACP) supports a mix of retail, residential, recreational and cultural uses in this location. This area has been classed as an activity centre since 2015 due to its proximity to the CBD and direct road, public transport, walking and cycling access.

Recognising this, the City is continuing to work proactively to ensure that development in the area is guided by the CBACP, to see it become a unique, vibrant community centred on the integrated transport node of the Canning Bridge station.
