Celebrating seniors in our City

News Update 3 November 2021

With WA Seniors Week just around the corner, we are celebrating our City as a great place to live for older members of our community. Taking place from 7 to 14 November this year, Seniors Week is a chance for people of all ages to acknowledge the valuable contributions of older people, while encouraging participation in recreational and sporting activities available to seniors.

There's plenty on offer for over 55's in the City of South Perth and we are showcasing just some of the free and low cost activities available during Seniors Week and year-round.

Seniors Day on the Green

We are inviting everyone aged 55 and above to Seniors Day on the Green from 10 to 11.30am Tuesday 9 November. Held at the popular new mini golf course at Collier Park Golf, a $10 ticket will get you a fun morning of mini golf in the sunshine and a delicious morning tea. It's a great opportunity to get together and enjoy some friendly competition in a relaxed environment.

Aged care talk

Join Southcare CEO, Dr Nicky Howe, at South Perth Library from 5.30 to 6.30pm on Tuesday 9 November to find out information about aged care services in our community. At this free session, Dr Howe will discuss how to access support, the transition into care and in-home respite options. Find out more about the Aged Care and Support in the Community talk and book your place.

Intergenerational Storytime

Our libraries' Storytime for under 5 session will be hosted at Manning Senior Citizens Centre for a special Intergenerational Storytime celebrating Seniors Week. All ages welcome and a morning tea will be provided following the story and activities. 10.30am-12pm, Thursday 11 November. The cost if free however bookings are essential.

Technology classes

Held at South Perth and Manning Library, the City offers free sessions to help older members of our community learn to tackle the digital world. Topics include getting to know your device, getting started online, and safe online shopping. Our small class sizes make it easy to ask questions and get the help you need. See upcoming Click: Be Connected sessions and book you place.

George Burnett Leisure Centre in Karawara run a number of free and low cost fitness and education programs tailored to older adults. The ever popular class Prime Movers takes place 9.30-10.30am every Monday and Thursday. It's an hour of low impact movements and stretches choreographed to music you know and love. Outdoor exercise equipment

One of our favourite spots to exercise outdoors is Neil McDougall Park in Como. Just near the children's playground, you will find exercise equipment especially designed to help older adults improve mobility. Have a go on the balance beam, balance rail, steps, twister machine, rocking stool, hand roll wheel, wave bar and horizontal bars. There's even a finger stair exercise to improve fine motor skills.
