Building works Connect South Maintenance Works

Construction for the Connect South stage 1 project is now well underway. This major project is set to transform Mends Street to become the gateway to South Perth and a destination for the local community and visitors.

Construction works

Works will generally be confined to the hours of 7am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, although it may occasionally be necessary to work outside these hours.

Works in August focus on the Mends Street foreshore area to include decking works along the river, the installation of furniture footings and the commencement of works for the seating area next to the jetty.

Installation of the numbat canopy Saturday 10 August
Traffic control on South Perth Esplanade for truck access. Footpath detours in place for shared path and jetty access. Ongoing to end of August
Single lane closure on southern side of South Perth Esplanade for the installation of street lights at intersection with Mends Street. 19 and 22 August from 7am-5pm
Pedestrian detour in place on the foreshore to allow for the works on the riverside decking. Ongoing throughout August 2019
Construction works associated with electrical substation. Works require the permanent closure of 6 bays in SPE 11, the parking area on the eastern side of Mends Street as well as adjustment of the temporary path on the foreshore.  Ongoing
Four car bays have been removed on South Perth Esplanade to allow for construction of the Western Power sub station.   Scheduled for the remainder of project

As with any construction project, works may be delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

The City understands that these works may be disruptive and we thank the community and all stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the construction works of this important revitalisation project.

Contractor MG Group will ensure the site is kept secure and that dust and noise is minimised during construction.

Parking

Parking is available on Mends Street and at South Shore Shopping Centre underground car park, accessible South Perth Esplanade. Parking is also available at Mends Street Arcade which can be accessed via Harper Terrace.

Project background

The first stage of the project will create a vibrant and accessible entry point to Mends Street, the Perth Zoo and greater South Perth. Works will include the development of an active pedestrian-friendly piazza on the Mends Street Foreshore and minor upgrades to the northern area of Mends Street, between Mill Point Road and South Perth Esplanade.  

Construction is anticipated to be completed in November 2019 at an estimated total project cost of $7.5 million with $2.5 million from Federal Government National Stronger Regions funding and $5 million from the City of South Perth.
