Connect South construction works: 8-21 April 2019

After years of planning and development, the City's Connect South project has entered the construction phase with the major project set to transform Mends Street to become the gateway to South Perth and a destination for the local community and visitors.

Parking

Parking is available at South Shore Shopping Centre underground car park, accessible South Perth Esplanade. Parking is also available at Mends Street Arcade which can be accessed via Harper Tce.

Construction works

Works will mainly be confined to the hours of 7am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, although it may occasionally be necessary to work outside these hours for specific reasons. 

Construction works from 8-21 April 2019 will include:

Works   Date

Construction works on Mends Street at the intersection of Mends Street and South Perth Esplanade. The works will include the upgrade of roads, footpaths, paved areas and the installation of new lighting, hard and soft landscaping, street furniture, irrigation and drainage.  

7am-4pm, Monday to Saturday. It may occasionally be necessary to work outside these hours for specific reasons. Works are scheduled to be completed in June 2019.

Mends Street will be limited to one way north bound only, the southbound lane will be closed. Detour signage is in place to direct vehicles. Two way traffic movements will be maintained on South Perth Esplanade. Access to properties and businesses will be maintained.

7am-4pm, Monday to Saturday, while construction works are underway at the intersection Mends Street and South Perth Esplanade. Works are scheduled to be completed in June 2019.
Traffic control on South Perth Esplanade for truck access. Footpath detours in place for shared path and jetty access. Partial road closure and temporary realignment of traffic lanes to facilitate road and footpath upgrades.  Ongoing to June 2019, 24/7
Construction works associated with electrical substation. Works require the permanent closure of 6 bays in SPE 11, the parking area on the eastern side of Mends Street as well as adjustment of the temporary path on the foreshore.  Ongoing

Realignment of existing drainage network around the footings for the new canopies requires full road closure on South Perth Esplanade.

During these works, access to South Shore underground car park will be via Ray Street.

8.30pm-6am, 16 April (night works)
Mends Street will be closed over night whilst Water Corporation undertake essential planned works. Every effort will be made to keep noise to a minimum. For further information, contact Water Corporation on 131375.
7pm-6am, 17 April (night works)
Concrete pour and grit blasting at the eastern corner of South Perth Esplanade and Mends Street. 7am-4pm, 17-18 April 

Upcoming and ongoing works Date 
Four car bays will be removed on South Perth Esplanade to allow for construction of the Western Power sub station.  This is scheduled to occur from 19 March for remainder of project, anticipated to be November 2019.

The City understands that these works may be disruptive and we thank the community and all stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the construction works of this important revitalisation project.

Contractor MG Group will ensure the site is kept secure and that dust and noise is minimised during construction.

Project background

The first stage of the project will create a vibrant and accessible entry point to Mends Street, the Perth Zoo and greater South Perth. Works will include the development of an active pedestrian-friendly piazza on the Mends Street Foreshore and minor upgrades to the northern area of Mends Street, between Mill Point Road and South Perth Esplanade.  

Construction is anticipated to be completed in November 2019 at an estimated total project cost of $7.5 million with $2.5 million from Federal Government National Stronger Regions funding and $5 million from the City of South Perth.
