Australia Day

The community celebrated Australia Day at the City of South Perth's inclusive, family-friendly celebration on Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth Foreshore on Saturday 26 January 2019.

More than 180,000 people lined South Perth Foreshore to soak up the sunshine and atmosphere at the City of South Perth’s Celebration Zone supported by Lotterywest.

From 3pm the Celebration Zone was the place to be, featuring multiple event areas with 100 free activities and roving entertainment suitable for toddlers through to adults. Spanning over 10 hectares along the South Perth Foreshore, the zone included a range of food vendors and ample shade and picnic areas for families to enjoy throughout the afternoon.

At 8pm all eyes turned to the Swan River as the City of Perth Skyworks fireworks dazzled the crowd.

The City’s Australia Day program of events commenced at 8am with the Flag Raising Ceremony which included the delivery of the Australian flag, a blessing, the formal unfurling and then the rising of the Australian flag by the Australian Defence Forces.

The Citizenship Ceremony followed where guests were welcomed with a traditional Welcome to Country before being inducted as new Australian citizens. At the ceremony the City welcomed a 100 new citizens from 41 countries.

The proceedings also included a presentation of the Auspire Community Citizen of the Year Awards, acknowledging those individuals and organisations that make a notable contribution during the year, and/or those who have given outstanding service over a number of years. The Ted Maslen Award was also presented to the student resident who achieved the highest score of all year 12 students within the City of South Perth.

At 9.30am local Rotary Clubs hosted a Great Aussie Breakfast, with all proceeds raised going back to the community.

“Our Australia Day events and Celebration Zone supported by Lotterywest continue to offer all members of the community the opportunity to come together and enjoy Australia Day in a safe, alcohol and smoke free environment,” City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty said.

“Throughout the day the South Perth Foreshore was buzzing with families and people enjoying the free activities, events and entertainment. It was a joy to see.”
