The year ahead

Mayor's Diary 14 January 2019

Welcome to 2019. I trust everyone enjoyed a festive season that brought with it joy and hope, and that resolutions for 2019 have been made. Whether or not we believe in resolutions, this time of the year inspires many of us to reflect and improve. This year my resolution is “New year, same me but better.”

One of the City’s most exciting projects – Connect South, is scheduled to start early this year. The $7.5 million project will see the Mends Street Foreshore in South Perth transformed into an attractive gateway to our city with a piazza, ample shade, and plenty of seating. Works will also include upgrades to the northern end of Mends Street.

The City’s Australia Day events return to South Perth Foreshore on Saturday 26 January. It starts at 8am with a Citizenship Ceremony and a breakfast barbeque. From 3-7.30pm the family-friendly Celebration Zone will entertain all ages with over 100 activities and events. It certainly is a wonderful day to celebrate on the banks of the Swan River before settling in to watch the fireworks in the evening.

This year our South Perth Sounds concert will be headlined by Aussie rockers the Hoodoo Gurus. The free event will include lots of pre-show entertainment, family activities and gourmet food trucks. See you there, from 5-8.30pm, Saturday 23 February at Sir James Mitchell Park on South Perth Foreshore.

In March, we launch a new free community festival in Manning. We’ve called it Hello Manning, it is a two day extravaganza of live music, entertainment, art installations, movie night, games and food. Come along and join in the festivities at Manning Community Centre and James Miller Oval in Manning, from Saturday 30 March to Sunday 31 March.

Our Annual Report 2017/18 reports on the City’s performance against our Strategic Community Plan 2017-2027. It is now available to view on the City’s website. Alternatively, you can view a hard copy at the Civic Centre and City’s Libraries, or collect a hard copy at the Civic Centre. You can also request a copy by writing, emailing or calling us.
