Emerging Artist exhibition opens soon

Media Release 4 September 2018

The City of South Perth’s annual Emerging Artist Award and Exhibition opens on Friday 21 September. This year’s program, runs over  nine days, and includes a range of day and evening events.

City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said the Award and Exhibition, now in its sixteenth year, had continued to grow, with 187 entries received this year.

“It’s fantastic to see the event continue to grow and attract such a high standard of entries,” Sue said. “From this year’s entries, our judges have selected 86 pieces for the exhibition with 27 youth entries.”

“I always look forward to the Exhibition. The quality of artwork is extremely high and attracts a wonderful diversity of mediums from 3D sculpture, painting and photography, to textile works.”

The City has also added two new award categories to the Exhibition; the Curtin University – Aboriginal Artist Award, and WA Natural Resource Management Program – Photography Award. This has increased the prize categories to nine, plus the People’s Choice Award, offering local artists the chance to share in $11,000 worth of prizes.

During the Exhibition a series of free events have also been organised by the City.

“We’re inviting people to come along to the Exhibition at the South Perth Community Hall and also enjoy one of the many pop-up events the City has organised,” Sue said.

“An exciting new initiative this year will involve artwork tactile tours being held during the Exhibition for people with visual impairments and intellectual disabilities by an organisation called Disability in the Arts, Disadvantages in the Arts. This initiative reflects the City’s commitment to its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and provides people with a disability the opportunity to come along and enjoy the exhibition.”

“There will also be a free cheese and wine tasting evening; a seniors’ afternoon tea; and food trucks with live music for all to enjoy.”

Emerging Artist Award winners will be announced at the Exhibition’s Award Ceremony on Thursday 20 September before the Exhibition opens to the general public on Friday, 21 September.

Further exhibition and event details can be found on the Events page of the City's website.
