Entries open for the 2018 Emerging Artist Award

Media Release 9 July 2018
Celebrating its 16th year, the 2018 Emerging Artist Award offers upcoming artists and art students the opportunity to exhibit their work to the wider community, as well as a chance to share in over $11,000 worth of prizes.

This Award is unique as it is the only arts program delivered by a local government in Perth specifically designed for emerging artists.

Limited to one entry per artist, artworks can be 2D, such as paintings or photography, or 3D, such as sculpture.

Entries for the 2018 Award are now open and must be received by 5pm, Friday 17 August 2018.

Open to the public, selected works will be exhibited in the City of South Perth Community Hall from Friday 21 September to Saturday 29 September 2018.

Awards are presented in 10 categories. This year’s judging panel is comprised of Barbara Cotter, Art Collection Manager at John Curtin Gallery; Charlotte Hickson, Exhibition Manager Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) and Ron Nysiztor, Artist and Director - Nyisztor Studio.

“This significant art award is specifically tailored for emerging artists in the early stages of their artistic careers while continuing to both support and encourage developing artists,” City of South Perth, Mayor Sue Doherty said.

“This year there are two new Award categories $750 Curtin University Aboriginal Artist Award and the $750 WA Natural Resource Management Program Photography Award which has the theme of ‘Your Urban Banksia Woodlands’.”

Ahead of the Emerging Artist Award exhibition, the City’s Evolve arts and skills workshops will run throughout August, offering classes in photography, jewellery, screen printing, life drawing, brush lettering and more.
