Register now for the Aussie Backyard Bird Count

News Update 15 September 2016
The City of South Perth is inviting the community to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count from 17 to 23 October 2016.

Register online to get involved in the national week-long event, then all you need is 20 minutes, your favourite outdoor space, and some keen eyesight.

Simply record the birds you see on the Aussie Bird Count app or through the Submit a Count tab on the Aussie Bird Count website. You’ll instantly see live statistics on the number of people taking part and the number of birds and species counted in your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia. Data collected will provide an important snapshot of the birds that live where people live. Each year we will be able to look at the trends in our bird communities.

Not only will you get to know your feathered neighbours, but you’ll be contributing to a vital pool of information from across the nation that will help BirdLife Australia see how Australian birds are faring.

There is no defined ‘backyard’. You could count in your actual backyard, local park, school yard or other favourite outdoor space. You can literally count birds anywhere – as long as you are in Australia.

You can complete as many counts as you like over the week – so get your friends and family together, head into the great outdoors between the 17 to 23 October and start counting!

As part of the Backyard Bird Count the City will hold a free Nest Box Building Workshop on Wednesday 19 October, 1pm at George Burnett Leisure Centre. At the workshop you will be able to build a nest box for your garden and all materials will be supplied. Nest boxes play an important role in wildlife conservation in areas where natural nesting hollows are not available. In urban environments in particular it is important to provide nesting areas for native birds in combination with landscaping to provide natural food sources for the birds. RSVPs for the workshop close 7 October.
