Summer Reads

mySouthPerth Magazine | BIRAK 10 December 2024
mySouthPerth

Our librarians share the books that should be by your side this summer.

Tamara | The Binding by Bridget Collins

In this charming book, magic blends effortlessly with historical detail. Set in a time when farmers used carts and pitch forks and books were valuable and skilfully bound by hand, a heartfelt love story unfolds.

Genre: Magical Realism

Sam | The Extinction of Irena Rey by Jennifer Croft

Eight translators meet in a primeval forest in Poland to translate the latest novel of the celebrated author Irena Rey. Soon after they arrive, their beloved author disappears.

Genre: Mystery

Amy | Grace Notes by Karen Comer

This is the 2024 Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year Award Winner for readers aged 13–18. This beautiful story follows two artistic teens navigating Melbourne’s pandemic lockdowns of 2020.

Genre: Young Adult

Catherine | The Penguin Lessons by Tom Mitchell

The Penguin Lessons is the adorable true story of a British teacher who rescues a penguin while travelling in Uruguay, smuggling him back to the prestigious boarding school where he is living and working.

Genre: Non Fiction

Kate | All Fours by Miranda July

All Fours tells the story of one woman's quest for a new kind of freedom. Surprisingly funny and nuanced in its character depictions and encounters, I quickly became invested in this weird and wonderful journey.

Genre: Fiction

Rosie | The Colony by Audrey Magee

A quiet and understated story of an English painter and a French linguist who travel to a remote island, each hoping to capture the essence of the islanders' culture in their own way.
Genre: Historical Fiction
