Live Art Studio - Lea Taylor | 2025 Evolve

As part of the  Evolve - Arts, Events and Culture Winter Program the City of South Perth has selected two artists to participate in a series of two Live Art Studios.

During each Artist's residency, the community will be provided with the opportunity to meet a working artist while they create an artwork.

Lea Taylor will be creating an artistic booka (kangaroo skin cloak) in the South Perth Library.

Lea Taylor is a Wadandi, Menang, Goreng and Bibbulmun woman, who started painting but soon discovered that her true passion and talent lay in coiling (weaving) and making booka (kangaroo skin cloaks). As a self-taught weaver and cultural artist, Lea gives her work a unique edge through the use of traditional and contemporary materials alongside the use of found objects such as bones, quills and feathers. Lea’s work comes from within and she strongly believes that her ancestors guide her to create in a cultural, respectful way.

Lea will be working on this artwork at the following times:

• Tuesday 29 July: 10am-2pm 
• Wednesday 30 July: 10am-2pm
• Thursday 31 July: 10am-2pm
• Friday 1 August: 10am-2pm
• Saturday 2 August: 10am-2pm 
• Monday 4 August: 10am-2pm
• Tuesday 5 August: 10am-2pm
• Wednesday 6 August: 10am-2pm
• Thursday 7 August: 10am-2pm
• Friday 8 August: 10am-2pm
• Saturday 9 August: 10am-2pm

This temporary live art studio will be on display from Tuesday 29 July until Saturday 9 August 2025, during South Perth Library opening hours.
