Old Mill home to new street library

Library 20 May 2021

The Old Mill in South Perth is home to a new little Street Library. City of South Perth Libraries have installed the free community library to complement the existing three BookStops at bus shelters located around the City.

The free community libraries are designed to get books into the wider community by encouraging people to ‘take a book, leave a book’.

One of the City’s librarians donated their time and artistic talent to paint the exterior of the Street Library. The artwork was inspired by the cute little house design and was painted so that it looks like a house from the distance.

The City plans to install a few more street libraries if the initiative proves popular with local residents.

The street library concept, founded in the US, is well-established by local Council’s around Australia. Anyone wanting to build or buy a street library can find out more at https://streetlibrary.org.au.

You will find preloved books at the Street Library and BookStops. The Library service aims to inspire the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.
