Local children join global 'bear hunt'

Local children in the City of South Perth are joining kids around Australia and the world on a global ‘bear hunt’ in a bid to beat boredom during the coronavirus situation.

Throughout our City’s suburbs an increasing number of teddy bears are popping up in windows and appearing in gardens, fences and on balconies encouraging children to ‘hunt’ for bears in their neighbourhood.

Inspired by the popular children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen, the worldwide movement is entertaining millions of children and adults alike as countries around the world enter extended periods of self-isolation.

For many, the motto of the book – “We’re not scared” – has resonated and inspired families to get outdoors, enjoy some fresh air and exercise all while respecting the rules of social distancing.

With an increasing number of parents and children now working and learning from home, the initiative is a welcome distraction for families whose daily routines have changed dramatically.

A clever band of local residents have initiated and created a City of South Perth Bear Hunt Map to encourage people to participate and make it easier for families to plan their ‘bear hunt’.

The City’s Libraries in South Perth and Manning have joined in the fun too, displaying some of their favourite teddies, rainbows and puppets in their windows.

Our local librarians have also recorded a special Story Time reading of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt that children can watch. The Libraries’ Story Time videos are available to watch for free on YouTube. The short videos a great way to keep children connected to their local librarians and foster a love of life long reading.
