New glow up for City parks and open spaces
Several parks and open spaces across the City are now safer and more accessible, following the installation of $50,000 worth of new lighting.
Completed in June, the project has delivered a mix of solar-powered and LED lighting at locations with poor visibility at night, including Windsor Park in South Perth, Coolidge Reserve in Como, Mettam Fairway in Salter Point and the Karawara Greenways. The upgrades will improve safety, accessibility and usability across these popular public spaces.
Funded by the WA Government through the 2025 Local Government Election Commitments, the project was facilitated by the City of South Perth and supports safer and extended use of public spaces for our community.
The new lighting has been designed to improve safety while reducing impacts on nearby residents and local wildlife. Energy-efficient LED lights, solar-powered units and smart controls help reduce energy use, while warm-coloured lighting and spill guards minimise glare and keep light focused on the pathways, reducing light spill into surrounding bushland and residential areas. The lighting can also be adjusted to suit different needs, making it cost-effective, easy to maintain and better for the environment.
The lighting upgrades form part of the City's ongoing commitment to creating safe, welcoming and well-connected community spaces. Recent projects have included Sir James Mitchell Park, with more areas of the City set to benefit from upgraded lighting over the coming year, including Neil McDougall Park in Como and George Burnett Park in Manning.
