The Black Swan Habitat (formerly the Waterbird Refuge) project is located at The Lakes area of South Perth Foreshore that sits east of Coode Street. This area contains a series of interconnected man-made lakes – Hurlingham Lake, Douglas Lake and Lake Tondut.

The Black Swan Habitat consists of an island, two vegetated headlands, a beach and a planted rock revetment.

The project is one of the actions of the City’s South Perth Foreshore Strategy and Management Plan which

provides improved habitat for native waterbirds while providing a retreat for bird watching, breeding, ecology, and learning.

The City successfully secured $700,000 in funding from the Parks and Wildlife Service at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to support the $1.5 million project.

An official opening ceremony was held on Thursday 30 September 2021 and the Whadjuk Noongar name of the habitat island was announced. The river is a sacred place for Noongar people and with respect to the traditional custodians of this land, the Black Swan Habitat island has been named Djirda Miya, meaning ‘home of the birds’.

The Canning Bridge to Curtin University Bike Link introduces safe active streets, upgraded shared paths, and a pocket park for those who walk, wheel or ride each day.

Supported by the State Government through the WA Bicycle Network grants program, this initiative reflects the City's ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure that offers safe travel options beyond driving.

The City developed a Masterplan for the stretch of foreshore from Clontarf through to Waterford and Salter Point. The Masterplan provides a consolidated management strategy recognising the ecological, cultural and recreational values of the area.

The Masterplan:

Addresses current and future foreshore management issues
Allows for unique landscaping design that embraces the changing environment
Supports environmental values to enhance native flora and fauna species
Provides recommendations for the upgrade of existing facilities and infrastructure
Establishes key areas for sport activities, passive recreation and nature spaces
Focuses on connectivity and accessibility along the entire CWSP Foreshore area
Recognises aboriginal cultural values and heritage significance of the area.

The Clontarf-Waterford-Salter Point Foreshore consists of a network of natural reserves, estuarine conservation wetlands, Bush Forever site 333 and public open space. These are the most extensive wetlands in the lower reaches of the Swan and Canning Rivers and there is no similar foreshore vegetation elsewhere along these rivers.

The Connect South project has grown from the South Perth Foreshore Strategy and Management Plan which identified Mends Street as a key area to redevelop.

Connect South encompasses the Mends Street Jetty foreshore, Mends Street, Harper Terrace and Windsor Park.

The project focused on improving public amenity via place activation, wayfinding, access to transport and greater economic opportunity. Connect South project was made possible with $2.5 million from National Stronger Regions Round 3 funding and $5 million from the City of South Perth.

A vibrant entry point has been created leading visitors up Mends Street to Perth Zoo and greater South Perth. The piazza, called Mindeerup, provides an engaging visitor experience with its active and passive spaces featuring a range of seating options and feature lighting. Two giant canopies in the shape of a frilled neck lizard and numbat now welcome visitors from the ferry and provide shade and weather protection.

Mindeerup is also the stage for an exciting nocturnal artwork using light, sound and projection to represent the cycles and rhythms of country from an Aboriginal perspective. Gobo projectors are used to share ancient stories of this place, ensuring Whadjuk Noongar culture is at the centre and a highlight of the new area.

Ernest Johnson Reserve provides recreational, sporting and social opportunities for the local community. The Reserve is located in South Perth, bounded by South Terrace, Sandgate Street, and Hensman Street.

The reserve and its associated buildings were redeveloped to better accommodate the needs of relevant sports clubs, community groups, the local community and the City.

The development and implementation of a Masterplan for Ernest Johnson Reserve was a key initiative in the City’s Strategic Community Plan and Corporate Plan.

The City of South Perth has completed a new conservation initiative as part of the Swan Canning Riverpark Urban Forest program.

This project is supported by $602,350 in funding from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, with the City contributing the remainder of the project cost.

The project has transformed the Hurlingham Drain and parts of the surrounding grass area into a vibrant, planted living stream, aligning with the City’s South Perth Foreshore Strategy and Management Plan 2015 for Node 7: The Lakes.

Native shrubs, rushes, and sedges were planted around the living stream to improve water quality flowing into the Swan Canning Estuary and foster greater biodiversity. This man-made channel enhances the park's natural beauty and also creates a diverse habitat for local wildlife, contributing to the area's ecological health.

In July 2018, the City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park adopted the state's first Joint Bike Plan. The plan sets out the long-term vision for a strategic cycling network covering both local government areas in line with the State Government’s Perth and Peel@3.5million Transport Plan.

The Bike Plan outlines a five-year action plan for improvements to the cycle network and environment for each local government to further investigate and implement.

Formerly known as the Manning Hub project, Manning Community Centre was created as the 'heart' for Manning. It provides the community with a vibrant, connected and attractive precinct integrating community services and social activities.

Manning Community Centre incorporates the relocated Manning Library, a community hall, Manning Child Health Clinic, Moorditj Keila Aboriginal Group, a sporting clubroom for Manning Rippers Football Club and an early years’ centre, home of the Manning Toy Library and a Manning Playgroup association.

Construction of the Manning Community Centre commenced in June 2015 and was completed at the end of 2016. The facility opened its doors to the public in February 2017.

Manning Laneway

Phase Two of the Manning Community Centre project focused on connecting the commercial area to the community facility with the extension of the pedestrian laneway through the former deli shop and updates to the streetscape and car park surrounding the Welwyn Avenue shops – now called Manning Laneway.
