Foreshore pathway upgraded with smart lighting
We’ve completed another stage of lighting upgrades to improve access and safety at Sir James Mitchell Park.
A section of the pedestrian pathway on the Sir James Mitchell Park foreshore is now brighter, with smart electrical lighting installed between the South Perth Esplanade car park and Mends Street.
The lighting will improve safety along the foreshore pedestrian path at night and has been designed to minimise impacts on nearby residents, as well as limit glare onto the river and surrounding wildlife. The system is highly customisable, with adjustable operating hours, and is low-cost and easy to maintain. Lighting levels operate at full brightness during peak evening hours (7–11pm), reduce between 11pm and 4am, and increase again from 4–7am to support early morning activity on the foreshore. Levels can also be adjusted for special events, fireworks or to protect nesting birds.
The next stage of the lighting upgrades, from Mends Street to Millers Pool, is expected to start in March. This work is providing new pedestrian path lighting to this section of the Sir James Mitchell Park foreshore path network. It’s one of the many ways the City is enhancing the Sir James Mitchell Park foreshore for residents and visitors by making it a safer, accessible and more attractive destination.
In November 2025, temporary solar lighting was installed from the Boatshed Café to the South Perth Esplanade car park to replace the bollard lighting that has been regularly targeted by vandals. These will stay in place for now.
