Sounds of Bunuru delivers music, culture and connection
James Miller Oval in Manning was abuzz with activity on Saturday as crowds gathered for an energetic evening of live music at the City’s Sounds of Bunuru concert. Picnic rugs dotted the grass as the community soaked up powerful music performances and free entertainment.
Headliner Becca Hatch delivered a standout performance, showcasing the soulful vocals and magnetic stage presence that have cemented her as one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary artists. The proud Kamilaroi/Samoan singer, known for her Triple J Unearthed High win, NIMA recognition and ARIA nomination, had the crowd swaying and singing along throughout her set.
Support came from Boox Kid, fronted by 2025 WAM Vocalist of the Year Jarred Wall, bringing their signature dreamy electropop sound to the stage. Lachy John and the Red Bellies delivered a powerful blend of Australian rock and blues, with heartfelt storytelling rooted in culture, resilience and lived experience.
Beyond the music, the event offered a full program of entertainment, including roving performances from Enchanted Stiltwalking, an Aboriginal art workshop by Scribblebark, face painting, a cultural display and yarning activity by Djoona Pty Ltd, as well as Youth Makers Markets and a wide variety of food trucks.
Saturday’s concert wrapped up a big summer of community events that also included Sounds in the Park, Southside Summer, and Carols at Sunset.
While the summer program has come to a close, there’s plenty more on the horizon, with exciting events like the Mural Festival, Heritage Festival and Youth Week just around the corner.
