First streetlight marks major step in underground power project
The Kensington underground power project is progressing well, with the installation of the first LED streetlight marking a major milestone towards transitioning the remaining pockets of the City of South Perth to underground power.
The project, which began in November 2025 and is expected to be completed by mid-2027, will connect more than 2,000 properties across South Perth, Kensington and Waterford, to underground power. It will also remove 678 poles, replace 29 kilometres of overhead powerlines and install 552 new LED streetlights, including the first one now installed in the area.
Western Power’s LED streetlights are brighter, longer lasting and more energy efficient than older lights. They reduce glare by only lighting targeted areas, reduce maintenance costs and improve visibility for safer streets. Their design also helps to create greener streetscapes with fewer poles and more space for trees.
The project area has been divided into eight zones (pictured here). Works in Zone 1 are progressing well, with Western Power currently locating existing underground services - such as gas and water mains and NBN cables - to ensure crews stay clear when drilling. Cable and customer mains installation is also underway, along with the area’s first LED streetlight on Campbell Street.
Zone 2 works have also commenced, with locating now underway on Canning Highway.
Western Power is partnering with the City to deliver the project, which will strengthen the power network, improve public safety and support a cleaner energy future. By moving power underground, the risk of outages during severe weather is reduced, while allowing for larger trees and greener streets.
Residents are asked to take care around work sites, follow all signage and remain alert for crews working in their area. Affected households will receive a letter ahead of each stage of works.
