An update on underground power for Kensington
Western Power is currently finalising the construction feasibility review and draft funding agreement for underground of power in the Kensington project area.
This is expected to be completed by Western Power by the end of October.
Following this, a report will be presented to Council to endorse the project and authorise contract execution.
The fee structure will be determined as part of the 2025/26 Annual Budget deliberations.
Underground power delivers a host of benefits such as improved reliability and security of power supply, enhanced streetscapes and visual amenity, improved property value, reduced street tree maintenance costs for local governments, improved LED streetlighting and ability to better support emerging technologies and future power demand.
The City’s vision is to have overhead powerlines placed underground throughout the entire City.
We are well underway to achieving this goal with many suburbs already serviced by underground powerlines, or projects under construction and nearing completion.
This project is part of the Network Renewal Undergrounding Program Pilot (NRUPP), a partnership between Western Power and the City of South Perth.
