One million milestone for Meals on Wheels

News Update 12 August 2022

The City of South Perth has reached a milestone that only a handful of local governments in Australia have achieved – a million Meals on Wheels deliveries.

This week, Mayor Greg Milner joined the City's Meals on Wheels volunteers for a special delivery to Val in South Perth, who also recently enjoyed another milestone, celebrating her 90th birthday.

Val is one of up to 100 residents who receive Meals on Wheels, which are prepared, packaged and delivered seven-days-a-week with the help of the City's 13 friendly volunteers.

Across Australia, some 76,000 volunteers help the Meals on Wheels roll out more than 10 Million meals annually. The service first began in Melbourne in 1953 by a lady delivering meals on her bicycle for one and threepence (about 13 cents). Adelaide and Sydney soon followed, along with Perth.

Our community has benefitted from the service since 1962, with 20 to 100 residents receiving Meals on Wheels deliveries each week. These have been especially vital since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, not only in terms of providing meals but also a friendly face.
