Floodlighting upgrade at Challenger Reserve

News Update 3 May 2021
Parks and Reserve works

The sports lighting at Challenger Reserve will be upgraded in May as part of the City's 2020/21 Capital Works Program.

Ten new floodlights will be installed at the perimeter of each of the three sporting fields and a new lighting control system will be installed to maximise energy savings and automatically regulate the lighting.

Construction works are scheduled to start the week commencing 3 May 2021 and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, weather and other conditions permitting.

Works will be undertaken in two phases:

Phase 1 will be completed within three weeks of the start date. There will be a period of limited construction activity before Phase 2 is scheduled to start.

Works will be confined to the hours of 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, although in order to complete the works it may be necessary to carry out some activities outside of these hours, including Saturdays.

Works will involve:

  • demolition and removal of redundant services
  • construction of new concrete footings
  • trenching and installation of new electrical services
  • removal of existing floodlights
  • installation of 10 new floodlights
  • testing and commissioning.

Traffic management and reserve access
There will be minimal impact on the reserve usage, although localised areas will be closed periodically to facilitate the works.

The City's Sports Oval Floodlighting Plan provides the framework for the upgrade of floodlights across the City’s active reserves.
