10,000 native sedges and rushes have been planted along the Sandon Park Foreshore in Salter Point to enhance the habitat of the area’s significant bird population and improve biodiversity for the Canning River Ecosystem.

The region is home to 42 different species of native birds including the Common Sandpiper, Common Greenshank and Caspian Turn which are protected. The area is also home to the iconic Black Swan.

The City received a grant from the Federal Government’s Community Environment Program to help fund the extension of the sedgeland, which has been identified as an important action from the Clontarf-Waterford-Salter Point Foreshore Masterplan.
