To celebrate completion of the second stage of the Ernest Johnson (EJ) Reserve $10.5m redevelopment in South Perth, the City is hosting a free community event on Thursday 22 November from 4.30-5pm.

All community members are invited to attend, enjoy the free sausage sizzle with complimentary tea, coffee and ice cream.

Completed in October 2018, a great nature play area for children has been created, along with spaces for the community to exercise in and use the newly installed fitness equipment.

Stage two has also included:

  • Landscaping
  • Native tree and shrub planting
  • Construction of new footpaths
  • Installation of playground equipment
  • Wayfinding signage
  • Barbeque facilities and picnic areas
  • Cricket nets
  • Drainage infrastructure and
  • Flood lighting.

“It has been really satisfying to see the positive benefits this project has brought to our community who have been waiting to see what the redeveloped area would look like,” Mayor Sue Doherty said.

“EJ Reserve is used by a wide range of user groups including local sporting clubs, fitness groups, families, children and dog walkers.  It is wonderful to see people enjoying the new nature play areas, exercise equipment and shaded social areas,” Mayor Sue Doherty said.

The first stage of the upgrade was completed in January 2018. It involved the construction of two contemporary, functional and sustainable multi-purpose community facilities; the John McGrath Hall and John McGrath Pavilion which house clubrooms, meeting spaces for local community groups and sporting clubs.

Other works have included the relocation of the Field Gun previously located outside the City of South Perth Sub-branch of the Returned and Services League Hall on Angelo Street to EJ Reserve (Sandgate St side). The Field Gun was moved following the relocation of the RSL headquarters to the John McGrath Pavilion on the Ernest Johnson Reserve.

The Reserve is located in South Perth, bounded by South Terrace, Sandgate Street, and Hensman Street.
