Australia Day on South Perth foreshore

Media Release 11 January 2018
Australia Day
The City of South Perth hosts a family friendly Australia Day celebration at Sir James Mitchell Park on the beautiful and iconic South Perth foreshore on 26 January each year.

The day commences with a special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, which includes the welcoming of the City’s newest Australian citizens, raising of the Australian flag, presentation of the Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards and the Ted Maslen Memorial University Exhibition Award.

The local Rotary Clubs then fire up the BBQ and host a great Aussie Breakfast to get you fueled up for the day ahead.

The Celebration Zone, a smoke and alcohol-free area packed with free activities, rides and entertainment for all ages kicks off at 3pm.

The Celebration Zone attracts families, youth and seniors from a wide range of demographics and offers plenty of rides, activities and cultural group performances. In the evening, all eyes turn to the beautiful Swan River as the City of Perth Skyworks light up the night sky. Visitors to the Australia Day Celebration Zone are strongly encouraged to use public transport.

The Kwinana Freeway exit ramps (Northbound and Southbound) and the roads bounded by Labouchere Road, Angelo Street, Douglas Avenue, Canning Highway and Ellam Street will be closed from 12pm to 10.30pm.

The Australia Day celebrations begin early with the City's Morning Ceremony; the day commences with the Flag Raising Ceremony where the flag is blessed and raised by the Australian Defence Forces.

The official ceremony then commences after 8am where guests are greeted with a Welcome to Country before being inducted as new Australian citizens. Members of the public are invited to join in and reaffirm their citizenship pledge together with the City's newest Australians.

The proceedings also include the presentation of the Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards, which acknowledges those individuals and organisations that have made a notable contribution throughout the year, and/or to those who have given outstanding service over a number of years.
