Local government elections – be a vocal local

Check your letterbox for your postal voting package. All eligible electors will receive a pack around three weeks prior to polling day 21 October 2017. The pack will include a list of candidates, ballot papers, instructions on how to vote and a decla ation. To vote, simply follow the instructions included in the pack. In the City of South Perth, 18 candidates will contest the local government election across four wards. I encourage you all to make your vote count in the upcoming local government elections.

Connect South

As part of the City’s Connect South project to invigorate the Mends Street precinct in South Perth, the City is working with consultants Spaced Out and local resident group South Perth Activation Network (SPAN) to support local activities in the Mends Street area.

The inaugural Mends Street Farmers Market took place on Sunday 1 October. The sun was out and there were stalls brimming with fresh food and produce filling the street. There was a wonderful atmosphere and it was great to see so many people turn out to support this great initiative. The weekly market will run every Sunday from 8am-12pm until 28 January 2018.

SPAN will also host a free pop-up movie screening in Windsor Park, South Perth on Saturday 14 October 2017. Bring your bean bag or picnic rug and settle in for a fun evening. The family friendly event will include a pre-show DJ, games for children, a screening of the documentary The Starfish Throwers, plus food will be available to available to purchase. Alternatively, bring your own picnic. More events will be announced soon, visit the Connect South project page or follow the South Perth Activation Network on Facebook to keep up to date.

Manning Community Centre

I was delighted to see the City's Manning Community Centre nominated as a finalist in the Australian Property Institute's National Excellence in Property Awards.

Nominated in the Local Government Property Award category, the Awards recognise innovation and outstanding achievement across the entire property industry with individuals, group and sector projects.

The Manning Community Centre is a multi million dollar project that I am extremely proud of. It was completed on time and on budget. It has created a new 'heart' for Manning and provides the community with a host of facilities including the new Manning Library, a community hall, Manning Child Health Clinic, Moorditj Keila Aboriginal Group, a sporting clubroom to house the Manning Rippers Football Club and an early years’ centre that is home of the Manning Toy Library and a new Manning Playgroup association.

Awards will be presented on 6 October 2017 in Melbourne.
