Emerging Artist Award now open - call for entries

Celebrating its 14th year, the City of South Perth’s 2016 Emerging Artist Award is now open for entries. 

This annual award offers upcoming artists and arts students the opportunity to exhibit their work to the wider community, as well as a chance to share in $8,500 worth of prizes.

In acknowledging the significance of the awards, Mayor Sue Doherty said, “This unique West Australian local government art award is tailored specifically for emerging artists in the early stages of their artistic careers. Each year the number of entries grow and this established award continues to offer support and encouragement to developing artists.” 

“The City values the important role the arts play in our community. The positive social, educational and economic benefits can’t be underestimated, and we’re committed to fostering local emerging talent and offering our community opportunities to take part in a host of cultural events throughout each year.” 

“We are proud to host these awards through the provision of support to artists and contribute to the local art scene, I look forward to viewing this year’s exhibition in October.”

Limited to one entry per artist, artworks can be submitted in a range of media including paintings, photography and sculpture. 

Selected works will be exhibited to the public in the City of South Perth Community Hall from Friday 21 October to Saturday 29 October 2016.

This year’s judges are Professor David Hawkins, Head of School, School of Design and Art, Curtin University, Jana Braddock, artist and curator and Tom Mùller, artist and Artistic Director/General Manager of PS Art Space Fremantle.

Entries close Friday 16 September 2016.

The Emerging Artist Award runs in conjunction with the City’s Evolve. development programme. This is a series of free and affordable skills workshops, along with information sessions for emerging and established artists, and community members who have a general interest in the arts. Emerging Artist Award Prizes

$4,000 City of South Perth | Open Award
 
All works entered into the City of South Perth’s 2016 Emerging Artist Award are eligible to receive this Award. 

$750 Liquor Barons on Angelo | Local Theme Award
At the discretion of the judges any work depicting, in title or content, the City of South Perth’s natural or built environment, lifestyle or landmarks, will automatically be eligible to receive this Award.

$750 John McGrath MLA | Young Artist Award
Works entered by participants aged 16-25 years at date of entry will be automatically eligible to receive this Award.

$750 Como IGA | Secondary School Student Award 
Works entered by participants currently studying at secondary school will be automatically eligible to receive this Award.

$750 White Frame | Local Artist Award
Works entered by artists living in the City of South Perth (suburbs of South Perth, Kensington, Como, Manning, Salter Point, Karawara and Waterford) will be automatically eligible to receive this Award.

$750 City of South Perth | Aboriginal Artist Award  
Works entered by artists of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent will be automatically eligible to receive this Award.

$750 Soco Realty | People’s Choice Award
This Award will be presented to the work that receives the greatest number of votes from exhibition visitors by the close of the exhibition period.As in previous years, the winning artwork will be pasted up in the Angelo Street Coles Underground Car Park alongside previous winners. 

All entries are limited to one entry per artist, artworks can be 2D, such as paintings or photography, or 3D, such as sculpture.
