Accolades for Riverwall Replacement Project
The City of South Perth’s civil construction contractor, MMM (WA) Pty Ltd, has received a prestigious Earth Award for their work on the South Perth Promenade Riverwall Replacement project.
The Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) Earth Awards recognise excellence in all areas of project delivery including construction management, innovation, and environmental and social management.
City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty congratulated MMM on their great achievement.
“MMM have done an excellent job in replacing the degraded river walls either side of the Mends St Jetty, with sustainability and the environment paramount throughout the project.”
The works undertaken by MMM included construction of 300m of limestone block wall and 65m of limestone biscuit rock revetment. The concrete removed from the old deteriorating river wall was crushed on site and reused as filter material behind the newly constructed wall.
An innovative steel sheet barrier system, installed along the length of the works, sat on the seabed and included a silt curtain to limit disturbance to the river.
“Good environmental management of the site has ensured our valued and precious Swan River habitat has not been impacted by the construction.”
The Riverwall Replacement Project is a component of the City’s South Perth Foreshore (SPF) Strategy and Management Plan.
“The SPF Plan aims to balance the competing demands for use, development and management of this precious reserve with the need to conserve and enhance a functional healthy river and foreshore environment.”
“The City has engaged extensively with the community and stakeholders to improve the amenity, access and sustainability of the South Perth Foreshore.”
MMM was awarded the Category 1 Earth Award Prize for projects valued up to $2 million at an awards evening held on 28 August 2015.
