Karawara comes up with plan
In acknowledgment of its inclusive and diverse consultation process, the Karawara Public Open Space (POS) Masterplan has won the 2013 WA Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) award for excellence in the category of Public Engagement and Community Planning. The City congratulates and thanks the community team for its contribution to the process.
The community led Karawara Public Open Space (POS) Masterplan, along with a supporting collaborative community activation plan, have been developed to provide a well-conceived mix of social space programs, recreation, ecology, culture, art, and safety for the benefit of all residents and stakeholders.
Consultants and City officers facilitated a number of community workshops and drop-in activities in Karawara between February and May 2013. All information and input received from the community engagement and Masterplanning process was collated into an agreed vision and four project principles:
- Building on Karawara character
- Amenity
- Safety and Security
- Connectivity
These findings have been translated into the Karawara POS Masterplan and distilled into individual projects for the Karawara Collaborative Action Plan 2013.
In late July 2013, an enthusiastic group of local residents partnered with the Gowrie and the City of South Perth to plant a community herb garden for the use and enjoyment of the Karawara community. This small-scale installation, Project 03 from the Masterplan and Collaborative Action Plan, is one example of a project that has already been implemented.
Implementation of the projects will include ongoing engagement and participation by Karawara residents and stakeholders.
