Community Forum Set for Future Train Station Development
The City is seeking input from the local community, as the Canning Bridge Train Station is set to offer commuter services by July 2007 (when the State Government’s New Metro Rail Perth Mandurah Rail Link becomes operational), and works are expected to be finalised on the South Perth Train Station by 2010.
As such, a community forum to discuss the areas around the Perth Mandurah Rail Link’s Canning Bridge and South Perth Train Stations will be held on Saturday 8 July 2006 at Technology Park in Bentley.
The forum is part of a wide ranging consultation process being carried out on behalf of the City of South Perth and the Western Australian Planning Commission, and is open to community members who register by 3 July 2006.
“The forum is excellent opportunity for community members to participate in the development of plans that will guide planning for areas around the stations,” said the City’s Mayor John Collins.
Forum participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and seek information from the key government agencies involved in the Perth Mandurah Rail Link.
The forum will not discuss the location or existence of the stations, but rather how the stations can benefit the City’s community.
Mayor Collins said both destination stations presented significant opportunities and the City was keen to ensure that any future planning around the stations delivered sustainable pedestrian friendly environments.
“Planning for the areas should reflect the values and aspirations of residents, business operators and community groups in the City, and we see this as an excellent opportunity to develop a community vision for the Station precincts,” said Mayor Collins, who added that the City was keen to ensure that any future planning around the stations delivered sustainable pedestrian friendly environments, in line with the Travel Smart initiative.
“We need to make it practical for our residents to travel by means other than the car, thereby reducing household transport expenses and enhancing quality of life in the City of South Perth,” said Mayor Collins.
In addition to the forum, focus groups have been held with local residents, while community groups, business operators, government agencies and schools are being interviewed.
Community members can register for the community workshop by telephoning Joanne Dodd at Estill and Associates on 9355 0300.
