Elections

The City's council elections are held every two years on the third Saturday in October. The Mayor and Councillors are elected for four-year terms, with half of the Councillor terms concluding at each biennial election.

The City of South Perth holds postal elections, which are conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC). Local government elections are conducted using the optional preferential voting system, following changes to the Local Government Act 1995 in 2023. This means that electors can vote for one or more candidates by numbering their ballot paper in order of preference. The candidate with the majority of votes, including preferences, is declared the winner.

For more information, please visit the Western Australian Electoral Commission for electoral roll enquiries and the preferential voting system and the Department of Local Government Industry Regulation and Safety for general election queries.
