First Australians

The Noongar/Bibbulmun people are the Traditional Owners of the South West of Western Australia. The City of South Perth is located on Whadjak Noongar Country and we acknowledge the continuing connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to this land.

For a number of years, the City has been working with local Aboriginal people and the community to build relationships, trust and understanding on our journey of reconciliation.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The City celebrates NAIDOC Week in July each year, by partnering with community organisations and local Noongar community members to host a series of events. Visit the Events section of the website to find out more.

Reconciliation Week 2025: Bridging Now to Next

News Update 27 May 2025
First Nations

Today marks the start of Reconciliation Week 2025. Celebrated from 27 May to 3 June each year, Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements - and further understand how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The 2025 theme ‘Bridging Now to Next’ calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us. This theme embodies the City’s commitment toward reconciliation, as outlined in our recently refreshed Reconciliation Plan 2025-2030. The plan provides a framework to guide how we continue to celebrate and strengthen recognition of First Nations culture and heritage in the City.

This year the City is participating in Reconciliation Australia's Community Banner Program to celebrate Reconciliation Week. This program will see two banners displayed in the City – located at Manning Road in Karawara (outside George Burnett Leisure Centre) and at the corner of Coode St and Mill Point Rd in South Perth.
