Last Run of the Duchess

The paddle steamer Duchess transported passengers from Mends Street to Barrack Street from 1898 to 1927, under the control of the same skipper, Mr. J. Game. In 1927 she was converted to a barge, and later wrecked while shipping gravel to Rottnest Island.

This photograph shows South Perth notables celebrating the last voyage of the Duchess as a passenger ferry. Local legend has it that so many well-wishers crowded aboard that the steamer nearly sank, and Captain Game was forced to turn back to Mends Street jetty and offload the late arrivals.
