Council backs Old Mill Theatre with 21-year lease
The City of South Perth has endorsed a new long-term lease for Old Mill Theatre Inc., securing the future of the much-loved community theatre on Mends Street for the next two decades.
At its February meeting, Council recognised the significant contribution of the volunteer-run organisation and endorsed a new 21-year lease for the heritage-listed theatre building through to 2047.
City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said the theatre had been an important part of the local arts and community scene for generations.
“The Old Mill Theatre is one of South Perth’s cultural gems and has been bringing stories to life for our community for more than 75 years,” Mayor Milner said.
“This long-term lease gives the organisation the certainty it needs to continue nurturing local talent, staging great productions and keeping this historic venue thriving.”
Old Mill Theatre has been a home for amateur theatre in South Perth since the late 1940s and remains a cherished cultural venue within the Mends Street precinct. Operated by a dedicated network of more than 260 volunteers, the theatre staged over 40 Fringe World Festival performances in early 2026 and welcomed more than 12,000 attendees in 2025.
The theatre also plays an important role in supporting the local arts community by providing opportunities for performers, directors, technical crew and students, while attracting audiences who visit nearby restaurants and cafés.
“It’s remarkable to see more than 260 volunteers contributing their time and energy to keep this theatre running,” he said.
“Their dedication ensures Old Mill Theatre continues to be a welcoming stage for creativity, connection and community.”
Old Mill Theatre Chairperson Roger Farley thanked the City’s administration and Councillor for their endorsement of this new lease.
“It is very much appreciated and assists us in our long-term planning to bring a fully diverse program of performances to the community,” he said.
Looking ahead, the theatre has secured a $75,000 State Government grant toward a major refurbishment later this year, with the organisation contributing an additional $103,256.
The new lease ensures the historic theatre can continue to provide a welcoming stage for local creativity and performing arts for many years to come.
