The City of South Perth backs 40km/h speed limit for safer streets

News Update 2 April 2025
The City of South Perth has aligned with other inner-city local governments to endorse a plan for implementing a 40km/h speed limit on local streets, aiming to improve road safety and create safer neighbourhoods.

The Council voted at its meeting on Tuesday night to endorse a formal application to Main Roads WA by the Perth Inner-City Working Group, which comprises the local governments of South Perth, Subiaco, Victoria Park, Perth and Vincent local governments, to implement 40km/h speed zones on local streets.

The City of Vincent has already introduced 40km/h zones in its local roads. The Town of Victoria Park, Town of Subiaco and City of Perth have this month also supported the expansion of the project into their local government areas.

The advocacy project for safer speeds in inner-city suburbs aligns with the City of South Perth’s Integrated Transport Plan 2012-2031. The City already has several existing 40 km/h areas, with the most recent being implemented in the South Perth Peninsula.

The 40 km/h speed zones are anticipated to be implemented from FY 2025/26, pending funding approval from the Road Safety Commission. These speed zones will cover all local access roads and some local distributor roads.

The City will collaborate with local police to educate the community about the changes and highlight the benefits of safer roads.

Following the introduction of the new speed limit, the community will be invited to provide feedback to assist the City in its evaluation of the project.
