South Perth Foreshore to illuminate Perth Festival

News Update 29 January 2025
A captivating beacon of light on the South Perth foreshore will welcome Perth Festival to Sir James Mitchell Park, as Karla Bidi lights up the skies and riverways of Perth from 7 February.

Located near the Scented Gardens, it is one of 11 beacons installed along the Swan River, inspired by the Noongar tradition of lighting fires to greet and guide visitors.

The installation will transform the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) into a stunning, illuminated pathway with large beacons of light stretching from the hills to the sea.

Karla Bidi is created through close collaboration between multi-disciplinary artists, Ilona McGuire, Jacob Nash, Chloe Ogilvie and Ian Wilkes and guided by Vivienne Hansen, Alta Winmar and the Perth Festival Noongar Advisory Circle.

The festival will run from 7 February to 2 March, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the unique light sculpture and soundscape up close at the foreshore, or view it from afar.
